The Old Fish Store

Old stone, two storeys, no sign. Not open to the public.

The old fish store stands at the far end of the western quay, beyond Bennett’s Chandlery and the boat stores. It is old stone, two storeys high, with weathered timber doors and a roof that has been repaired piecemeal over the years with materials of varying ambition. It carries no sign.

Fish was stored here from at least the 1920s, until the fish market moved across the harbour. During the war the building was requisitioned by the Navy and used for supplies.

Older residents know it as the Tanner building. Nobody now seems able to say who Tanner was, and the Historical Society would be glad to hear from anyone who can.

The building is privately owned and is not open to the public. It may be seen from the quay.
