Magician’s case found at harbour mouth

A travelling magician left the stage of the pier theatre on a Saturday night and walked along the pier. A reprint from the Chronicle of 1924.

From the Seabrook Chronicle, August 1924.

A small wooden case taken from the water near the harbour mouth on Tuesday morning has been identified by the manager of the Pier Theatre as the property of the travelling magician who was engaged there for the week, and who has not been seen since Saturday night.

The magician gave his performance at the second house on Saturday and left the stage at about half past ten. Two persons who were on the pier at the time state that they saw him shortly afterwards, walking in the direction of the end of the pier and carrying the case. He did not return to his lodgings.

The case was shut when it was found. The police have taken charge of it and have not said what it contains.

The pier was searched on Sunday and again on Monday, and the boatmen have kept watch at each tide.

The management of the theatre asks us to state that the remainder of the week’s engagement will be filled by a ventriloquist.

The magician was never seen again.
