The car park machine
Sir,
The car park machine.
It came into use on the 2nd of January and it has printed the wrong year ever since. You printed my first letter on the matter on the 15th of January. Nothing has been done.
On the 3rd of February, at four minutes past nine, I bought a ticket for the purpose of examining it. It was dated 2011. I now pass the Harbour Road car park every morning and read the tickets displayed in the windscreens. On the 9th of February there were fourteen cars. Thirteen displayed a ticket. Every one of the thirteen was dated 2011.
I have written to the Town Council on the 5th of January, the 19th of January and the 9th of February. I have had one reply. It thanked me for my interest.
A ticket is a dated document. If the date is wrong, the document is wrong. It does not help that the day and the month are right. Two parts in three is not a standard.
Nobody is taking it seriously.

The bakery awning
Sir,
I write to object to planning application 26/0031, for a replacement awning at the bakery on the High Street.
The present awning projects four feet over the pavement. The application is for four feet six inches. No reason is given for the six inches.
The pavement at that point is five feet wide. I have measured it. The new awning would cover all of it except the kerb.
The High Street is in the conservation area. If six inches are allowed at the bakery they cannot be refused at the butcher’s, and I do not think the Council has considered where that leads.
I have objected in writing and I shall attend the meeting.

The gulls
Sir,
The Council asks that bins be at the kerb by seven o’clock on the morning of collection. Last week mine was out at twenty to seven. By seven the gulls had the lid up, and the lids of four others on Chandler Street.
They start at one end of the street and work to the other. They leave alone any bin that holds only paper. I should like to know how they can tell.
I rang the Town Hall and was advised to put a brick on the lid. I put a brick on the lid. This week the brick was on the pavement.
